BATHS FOR MARTINBOROUGH

CAMPAIGN TO RAISE FUNDS MEETING LAST NIGHT (“Times-Age” Special.) Practically every sporting and other organisation, both men’s and women’s, in Martinborough were represented at a meeting held last night to discuss the question of obtaining swimming baths for the town. Mrs R. Burch occupied the chair, which was later taken over by the Mayor, Mr C. W. Skill. The meeting unanimously decided that baths were both necessary and desirable, and it was stated that one estimate of the cost had been between £2500 and £3OOO. The following representative general committee was set up to launch a vigorous campaign for funds: Messrs Lawrence, Lynch, Boyd, Brimble, Pryor, Skill, Johns, Hancox, Ussher, McCardle, Cotter, Grant, Simpson, Hamilton, Corfield, Wright, Amos, McGillicuddy, Plummer, Morrison, Mesdames Caseley, Jamieson, Burch, Chapman, Wright, Beveridge, Misses Smith and Alpe. An executive committee consisting of Messrs Skill, Brimble, Pryor, Boyd, Lawrence and Ussher (secretary), was also appointed to secure an estimate of the cost and other preliminary details of the baths and to report to a further meeting of the general committee in three weeks’ time. Mr Skill offered to donate £2 towards the cost of obtaining the estimate, but it was decided to' ask the Martinborough Borough Council to bear the cost as it was recognised that when completed the control of the baths would be vested in the council. Votes of thanks were passed to Mrs Burch for calling the meeting and to Miss Smith for acting as secretary. A queen carnival and a local art union were mentioned as probable means of raising the necessary finance.
