MAGISTRATE’S COURT. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided at the monthly sitting of the Martinborough Magistrate’s Court, held yesterday. “Part of the light on my bike was pinched, I mean stolen, soon after I got it,” remarked Ronald Heigh, who was charged with riding a bicycle after dark without a light. Mr Lawry fined defendant 10s and 12s costs and said: “These laws are made as much for you as anyone else to protect you from getting hurt.” On a similar charge Ronald Baird was also fined 10s and 12s costs. For driving a motor-car without a warrant of fitness, Robert Robinson was convicted and fined £1 and 10s costs. i Political Address. There was a large attendance of ladies in the Odd Fellows’ Hall yesterday afternoon when a political address was given by Mrs Peter Fraser, wife of the Minister of Health. Inter-School Contests. Yesterday was a gala day for the pupils of* the Martinborough and Featherston District High Schools when the final events for the Ailsa McDonald Cup were decided at Martinborough. There are five events for both boys and girls and the concluding two played yesterday were Rugby and basketball. The Rugby match was won by Martinborough and the Featherston Girls were successful in the basketball. Earlier in the year the Martinborough girls won the athletic, tennis and cricket matches, while Featherston won the swimming event. The Martinborough boys won the swimming and athletic events and Featherston won the cricket and tennis matches. Martinborough retained the cup by 6 points to 4. Miss Joy McAllum Honoured. A delightful party was given by St Andrew’s Bridge Club on Tuesday evening in honour of Miss Joy McAllum (a foundation member) who is shortly leaving Martinborough to reside at Eastb.ourne. Mesdames H. L. Griffiths and A. Brimble acted as hostesses and during the evening Mrs Evans, on behalf of the club, made a presentation to the guest of honour. Amongst those present were Mesdames F. McLeod, J. W. Kershaw, F. F. Dale, D. R. Matheson, W. J. Knell, E. J. Beale, A. Cuthbert, J. M. Coutts and Misses C. Martin, H. Mitchell, M. Martin and J. Hibberd. Personal. Miss M. Daniell, late of the staff of the District High School, Martinborough, who has been spending the vacation as the guest of Mrs D. Cameron, Hinakura, is now staying with Miss McAllum before returning to Palmerston North.
