STREET TREES

PRUNING DURING FLOWERING PERIOD. COMPLAINTS BY RESIDENTS. The pruning of flowering plum trees in Miriam Street while the trees are in full flower is the subject of protest by many residents. It is stated that as these trees only flower for about three weeks the pruning could easily be left until the flowers have fallen, especially as the general beauty of the tree is somewhat marred after the branches have been cut back. Covered in blossom, with some of the branches drooping, . the trees present a particularly pretty sight, but when they have been straightened up and topped by pruning most of the effect is lost. One resident who makes a practice of showing the flowering trees to visitors was disagreeably surprised to find pruning under way. The explanation given by Mr A. W. Reynolds, secretary of the Masterton Beautifying Society, which carries out the work, is that the trees are being pruned later to give a better check to the growth. He added that the cherries in Victoria Street would be pruned before they flowered.
