CARTERTON

SAVAGE CLUB KORERO. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Carterton Savage Club held its fortnightly korero on Saturday night, but owing to illness several members were unable to attend. Big Chief A. E. Hall installed Past Big Chief Stent as the presiding Chief for the evening in place of Past Big Chief H. B. Keenan, who was unavoidably absent. The Glee Club gave much appreciated numbers as did Savage P. L. Darke (pianoforte solo), Savages J. L. Ewing and S. T. Rooney (songs) and J. L. Barnard (Greytown) a recitation. Impromptu addresses were given by Savages W. Sorensen on astronomy, W. F. Stent (cows) and D. L. Taverner (fishing). The official speaker for the korero was Mr J. F. Thompson (Greytown) who spoke most entertainingly on “Maori. Lore, and the Migration of the Maori from Asia to the Pacific.” Mr Thompson, as., at previous Savage Club functions, held the interest of his audience throughout, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks on the motion of' Savage James Steel. The toast of the visitors was proposed by Savage C. K. Goodin and Paleface W. R. Harry suitably replied. A community sing lead by Savage J. L. Harris completed an enjoyable function. Obituary. The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital yesterday of Mrs Elizabeth Agnes Greeks, relict of the late Mr Rayner Greeks. The late Mrs Greeks , who was 80 years of age, resided for many years at Middle Run, but of late years had lived in Park Road, Carterton. She lead a very quiet life and was a favourite with her many friends. Mr Alf. Booth, of Carterton, is a son-in-law, Mrs Booth being the late Mrs Greeks only child. Personal. Mr R. G. Ward, who has been on relieving duty at the Carterton School, has received notice to take up relieving duties at the Masterton Central School, and commenced his duties this morning. " Mr J. Walker, who has been on the outside staff of the Carterton railway station for some time, and is a prominent playing member of the Carterton Football Club, has been appointed to a position at Oringi, near Dannevirke. Mr C. Rosy th, who has been captain of the Carterton football team, which won the senior championship this season, has accepted a position at Woodville and will leave for that district forthwith. Mr ljH, : H. L. Meyrick, the local stationmaster, who with Mrs Meyrick spent three weeks’ holiday in the Taranaki and other districts, have returned to Carterton. Mr Alban J. King, at one time a member of the Carterton Post Office staff and who some time since was transferred to the Halcombe Post Office, has been appointed to the staff of the Weber Post Office, Dannevirke. Mr J. A. McCash, of the local railway station, who has been relieving stationmaster during Mr Meyrick’s absence on holiday, has with Mrs McCash left on his annual vacation which will be spent principally in Wanganui. Ciareville Function. There was a large attendance at the fortnightly euchre tournament and dance held in the Ciareville Hall on Friday last, Mesdames T. Olliver, W. Abbott, E. James and Edwards tied for first place in the ladies’ euchre competition, while six men' tied for first place in the men’s section. Final prizes went to Mrs H. Meyrick and Mr W. Abbott. The consolation prizes were won by Tvlrs V. Daysh and Mrs E. Allen. The Monte Carlo was won by two little girls, Miss Humphries and partner. Mr and Mrs P. Cotter who are leaving the district for Master ton after five years residence in Carrington were the guests of the evening. After supper Mr Wilson, chairman of directors of the Carrington Dairy Factory, presented Mr and Mrs Cotter, on behalf of the residents of West Taratahi and Carrington with a crystal salad bowl and servers. Mr Cotter was also given a shaving outfit. Mr Cotter suitably replied and he and Mrs Cotter were accorded musical honours. Mrs A. T. Hawke, treasurer of the Ciareville Hall Committee, extended good wishes on behalf of the community to Mr and Mrs Cotter. MINIATURE RIFLES. INTERCLUB COMPETITIONS. The interclub competitions fired under the jurisdiction of the Wairarapa Miniature Rifle Association have been completed for the present season, the senior teams’ competition being won by South Featherston Club with a score of 9,744, Masterton being second with 9,743, followed by Featherston 9,566, Carterton 9,526, Martinborough 9,493, Greytown 9,473. The junior competition went to the Masterton Club (9 wins and a draw) with a score totalling 4,787, South Featherston being runners-up with 8 wins and a draw, their total score being 4,729. Carterton and Featherston had four wins each and Greytown and Martinborough 2 wins each. The Association Cup competition was won by Mr C. Bain of the South Featherston Club, with the remarkable score of 797 out of a possible of 800; D. J. Flynn, of Martinborough, was second, scoring 791, and D. P. Donald third with 790. The following team will fire a match against Mako Mako Club on Tuesday evening next: —R. Taucher, R. Hawker, N. F. Teal, C. J. De Lacey, Miss Fisher, H. Torrey, D. Gayfer, G. Sewell, E. Miller, W. Sewell. Private board is advertised for.
