POPULAR CONCERT
MUNICIPAL BAND & OTHER ARTISTS. A bright programme of great merit was presented to a fairly large audience in the Opera House last night by the Masterton Municipal Band and supporting artists. The band, under the baton of Mr G. W. Hutchinson, opened the programme with two pleasing numbers, “Layonia” and “Lead Kindly Light.” A fascinating gentleman, billed as Zara, did some amazing things with his hands and a few odds and ends. Two delightful ballads were sung by Mr L. Wales, popular Masterton baritone. Two pre-sent-day “hits,” “The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down” and “Did Your Mother Come From Ireland,” presented by the band, met with well-merited applause. Mr D. Wellington was heard to advantage in two saxophone solos, and Mr R. Foster had the audience laughing with his “negro interpretations.” Extremely popular was the Blue River Dance Band, which swung its waythrough four bright numbers, “The Donkey Serenade,” “Ti-pi-Tin,” “Vieni Vieni,” and “Chinatown My Chinatown.” An excellent evening’s entertainment was brought to a close with the “Kangaroo March” by the Municipal Band.
