GROWING CHICKENS

NEED CAREFUL ATTENTION. Growing chickens should always be under close observation. A sickly or weak-looking chick should be removed at once. If the growth of the chickens is checked it may take a long time to make up the delay, no matter how short it is. If a chicken gets actually sickly and after treatment appears even in good condition it is as well to believe that its temporary setback will have a lasting effect, and that it is extremely unlikely to prove a profitable bird to keep as a layer, and a dangerous one to breed from. By closer observation of the chickens at feeding time much trouble may 'be avoided. Not only by appearance, but by the quality of their chirping the owner should know whether all is well with them. Damp fluff or feathers indicates lack of ventilation, open mouths gasping for breath tells the same story, and also, probably, that the heat is too great. Crowding around the heater indicates insufficient warmth in the brooder. See that the chickens spread cut. Feed a little at a time and often. Watch that they are eager at meal time. Keep the floor of the brooder clean. See that the water from the drinking vessel does not get splashed all over the brooder floor, and that the chickens cannot get into the drinking vessel.
