HOCKEY

WELLINGTON v WAIRARAPA. SATURDAY’S RESULTS. Hockey enthusiasts were well catered for on Saturday when four representative games were played in Masterton between Wairarapa and Wellington team. Conditions were not of the best, heavy'showers falling during the afternoon which made the grounds very slippery. Despite the weather there was a good attendance. The games provided some exciting hockey. Honours of the day went to'Wairarapa who won both junior games and drew in the senior ladies, while Wellington won the senior men’s game. Results: — Senior men: Wellington 4, Wairarapa 2. Junior men: Wairarapa 5, Wellington 1. Senior women: Wairarapa 5, Wellington 5. Junior women: Wairarapa 3; Wellington 1. SENIOR MEN’S GAME. FAST AND INTERESTING PLAY. Z ■' ' The senior men’s contest was a very fast a#id interesting one from the initial bully. Wellington were a bit slow to get going and Wairarapa dominated play for most of the spell, Marshall the Wellington goalie, being kept busy. S. Fisher opened the scoring for Wairarapa with a smart reverse shot. Wellington, however, were going better now and once the forwards broke away proved hard to stop. The frowards all took part in Wellington’s first goal, Roberts finishing off the movement. Shortly after Wellington again broke through and Roberts again goaled. Wairarapa were getting their fair share of the ball but could not find the net. Wellington were playing pretty hockey and exploiting the flick shot in nice style. Their positional play was also very good. Just before half time a smart run by the Wellington forwards saw the Wairarapa goalie come out of the net to tackle but was too late and Edwards goaled easily making the score 3/1. The second ’spell saw Wairarapa again doing most of the work. Wellington appeared to be sitting on their lead, but were giving a good exhibition. Wairarapa were always dangerous and missed several good chances by overeagerness. A nice pass by Hooper was well received by A. Fisher who flicked the ball into the net. Being one goal behind Wairarapa pressed hard to even up and Wellington were kept very busy defending their goal. Wairarapa were awarded several penalty corners but could not get one past the goalie. Wellington cleared and the forwards raced down the field in a pretty movement which was capped off by Chipman who goaled with a hot shot. Wellington were back again soon after but time was called with the score Wellington 4, Wairarapa 2. Messrs Burnip and Hayne were the referees. The Wellington team was the same that is to meet Auckland for the Shield, except that Roberts replaced Wheatley. The Wairarapa team put up a splendid exhibition. The backs were very good to a man. The weakness, if any, was with the forwards who could not just finish off. JUNIOR’S MATCH. WAIRARAPA’S SPLENDID WIN. The match between Wairarapa and Wellington juniors was a very interesting one, being fast and spectacular. Wairarapa, however, were too good on the day and won comfortably. Wairarapa set off at a great pace and had the visitors well hemmed in their own twenty-fiye for most of the first spell and gained a good lead of 4/0, goals being scored by Tooby, Harrington, Reeves, and Faulknor. In the second spell Wellington made a much better showing and play was very even for the rest of the game, each side scoring a goal. Hill goaled for Wellington and Tooby scored from a penalty bully for Wairarapa, making the final score 5/1 in Wairarapa’s favour. Messrs Tooby and McCaffrey were the referees.

Before returning home the visiting players were the guests of the Wairarapa Association at a dinner where the usual toasts were honoured. WOMEN’S GAMES. EXCITING SENIOR CONTEST. The senior women’s match was the most exciting game seen on Lansdowne this season. Both teams contained a good forward line and the game was a duel between both sets as the score see-sawed from one side to the other. Wellington were the first to score, but Wairarapa soon evened up. Play went up and down the field at a great pace and when the half-time whistle went the score was 3 all. Though the pace slackened up a bit in the second spell, the excitement was intense as the game progressed. Wellington were leading 5/4 with five minutes to go but Wairarapa evened up just before time to make the score 5/5. Goals were scored for Wellington by Miss Pettey (3) and Miss O’Brien (2); for Wairarapa N. Fage (3), E Madsen (2) The referees were Messrs Brough (Wellington) and Morice (Wairarapa). The Wairarapa forwards went very well, Misses Page, Madsen, Payne and Stuart combining very well. The best backs on the ground were Z. Pickering and D. Leforte.

AN EVEN GAME, WAIRARAPA’S SOLID DEFENCE. The junior ladies’ game was very evenly contested, and though Wairarapa won the result could easily have been reversed. Wellington had a slight territorial advantage in the first sjlell but could not break down the solid defence of the Wairarapa backs, who played good hockey. Once the Wairarapa forwards got away they were always dangerous. After fifteen minutes’ play Wairarapa broke through for Miss Johnson to open the scoring. Wellington were still doing most of the attacking, but could not get past Misses Beard and Mills, the Wairarapa fullbacks. There was no further score and the spell ended at 1/0. The second spell saw Wellington again on attack but Wairarapa were equal to the occasion, Miss Palmer getting in some sound defensive shots. Miss Harding raced down the field and

sent in a good pass to Miss Russell who goaled, making Wairarapa 2/0. Wellington were playing without any luck and although they got to the circle just could not finish off. Miss B. Strickland ran right through the defence but missed the shot. Soon after P. Grant made a similar run only to shoot wide. Wairarapa were seen on attack for a time, Misses Harding, Russell and Kearns being prominent. From a melee in the circle Miss Beattie scored Wairarapa’s third goal, and the local team led 3/0. Wellington were at last rewarded when Miss D. Hill found the net just before time and the game ended: Wairarapa 3, Wellington 1. Messrs Brough and McCaffrey were the referees. The visiting ladies were entertained at afternoon tea by the Wairarapa Association and also before leaving for home.
