SLEEVE BUTTONS

WHY THEY ARE WORN. Fashion decrees many things, including the number of buttons that shall be worn on coat sleeves. For different occasions, and according to the prevailing mode, these vary from one to four, and we sometimes ask the reason why there should be buttons on sleeves at all. The custom dates back to the days when men’s coats were much more elaborate than they are today. The sleeves were often richly embroidered, and, to avoid soiling the cuff on certain occasions, it was necessary to fasten them back over the arm. It time it became the fashion for the sleeves to be buttoned back permanently, and for the cuffs to be lengthened, so that, eventually, buttons and buttonholes became little more than ornaments on the sleeves.
