THE WEDDING FEAST
THE INDIAN METHOD. At an Indian wedding feast the dining cloths are laid upon the ground, mango leaves serve for plates, and fingers for cutlery. The bride, half-hidden in her rich sari, and adorned with gems and trinkets of gold and jade, serves her in-laws and kneels with bared feet before each to ask a blessing. They consume such delicacies as rotis, poppodams, and pilau, as well as curries and fried vegetables. Spiced and scented rose leaves are flung amid the guests whilst they squat and eat, and listen to the jingling anklets of the dancing girls. Finally the wedding cake is brought to the scene. It is a rice pudding garnished with sliced fruit, almonds, and coconut, and after this course the bridegroom calls and carries off his bride to her future home.
