ON COLD DAYS

CLOTHING FOR THE CHILD. The mother who desires to dress her child suitably for a cold day does not always realise that she may neglect two important parts of his anatomy. This refers to the shoulder and knee joints, structures that contain large sacs of lubricating fluid. The tissues over these joints are not padded with much fat, and therefore the cold strikes them quickly. It is essential that baby’s or the toddler’s shoulders and knees should be given plenty of consideration in wintry weather. The wool and silk or woollen vest which he wears during the day should have short sleeves. When this vest is removed for his night attire, he should have an extra covering, a woollen packet over the upper part of his body to supplement his pyjamas, for a young child seldom keeps the blankets up to his chin and over his shoulders as does an older person. Stockings or gaiters should be worn by the baby or toddler to help keep his legs, knees, and feet warm. Garters should not be used to keep the stockings up, for an elastic tight enough to hold them up firmly would then be too tight to allow proper circulation in his limbs. Suspenders attached to a bodice for that purpose are the best solution.
