LAND AND WATER TRIALS RECORD ENTRIES. NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS. The North Island and Wairarapa water and land dog trials, held on Mr H. Nee’s property, Opaki Road, during the weekend, attracted record entries from many parts of the North Island and from Christchurch. The trials, which were run under most adverse conditions, were held under the auspices of the Wairarapa Kennel Club. Everything went off without a hitch and visiting competitors congratulated the club on the way in which it had conducted the meeting. Mr P. W. Willson, Lower Hutt, acted as judge, and Mr C. E. Grey, president of the club, presented the trophies to the winners at the conclusion of the trials. The standard of performances throughout was exceptionally good, especially in view of the difficult conditions. The North Island Spaniel Championship was notable in being the first Spaniel Championship held in New Zealand. The winning dog, Mr T. Bradshaw’s Brunlea Gunner, put up a very good performance indeed and its success goes to show that the spaniel can hold its own against bigger dogs. The smallest dog in the field, it won the land section of the Wairarapa Championship. The North Island Setter and Pointer Championship was won by Mr K. J. Collins’s Seaford Spy, which put pp a creditable performance. There were only six competitors in this event. In the North Island All Breed Championship Mr R. V. Mason’s Field Trial Champion Labrador, Silky Sue, which has gained sufficient points to be a double New Zealand Field Trial Champion, won against the best dogs in New Zealand. This Labrador put up a wonderful performance in both the land and water trials. The second and third dogs were close up. Mr P. C. Crooke’s black curly-coated retriever Bombadier Ragsleigh, scored the possible of 100 points in the water section of .the North Island Championship, Mr Mason’s F.T. Ch. Labrador Silky Sue being second with 99 points, and Mr Green’s Irish Setter, Lorna’s Boy, third with 98 points. For the third time in succession Mr Mason won the Wairarapa Club Championship Aggregate with the same dog, F.T. Ch. Silky Sue. This dog, in the North Island Land Trial Championship, made a faultless run and was an easy winner. The judge could not separate the next two dogs for second place (Mr Birkett’s Irish Setter Basuto Belle and Mr R. W. Plunkett’s Irish Setter Redstone Tawa). Unfortunately, Mr Plunkett’s dog had gone away before a further trial could be held to decide the holder of the cup which goes to the competitor placed second in this event. The run-off will probably be held at the Manawatu Gun Dog Club’s trials at Palmerston North next weekend. In the Puppy Land Trial, Mr M. A. Rawlins’s Labrador retriever Cleopatra May (the youngest competitor at the Championship meeting by several months) won with a creditable performance, securing 90 points in a strong field, Messrs C. Smith and R. H. Buick had an arduous but successful time with the guns, the shooting being of a high order. Following are the results of the various events: — North Island Spaniel Championship. Mr T.
