SMART HATS
PARIS FASHIONS. Nothing in Paris is more subject to change than a smart woman’s hat, and this season, millinery is presented in thousands of different fashions, and everyone may be assured of finding the hat indicated for bringing out her type of beauty. Little toques, capelines, Bretons, skull-caps with amusing sauc-er-like fronts attached to them —and the eternal beret, are neighbours to all kinds of amusing headwear of foreign or peasant inspiration. The second Empire has set the tone for certain shapes lengthened from’ front to back, whose little brims are turned down in the forehead and on the the nape. The new models still stress height, but a most obliging altitude, because the cleverly designed crown may be deftly puffed or pulled backwards or to one side. Gone are the starkly untrimmed affairs. These models are softened alluringly with flowers feathers or ribbons, and with seductive films of veiling. Soft chiffon-felts, all kinds of straws and velvets are the high fashion fabrics for these models. Rich glowing colours, tawny gold, stained-glass window colours of red, blue, purple and lovely greens, are strong contenders against the always smart black or dark brown. Trimmings are generally perched on the crown and sometimes feature a somewhat accentuated movement with height. Wired ribbon bows are placed thus, also large pegs of flowers, and even an artless little bird, generally in a bright colour. The use of birds singly, or in amusing groups, continues to find favour with Parisiennes.
