WELFARE LEAGUE

MEETING IN MASTERTON. The monthly meeting of the Women’s National Welfare League was held yesterday afternoon at the Midland Hotel, Those present were Miss Kummer (in the chair), Mesdames T. Jordan, R. C. Drummond, G. H. Collie, S. Fletcher, -H. P. Harrison, T. F. Watson, S. -L. P. Free, R. Whyborn, S. J. Munn, F. Daniell, Miss Boddington. Apologies were received from Mesdames J. Caselberg, W. McKenzie, E. Hodder, F. Garland, G. G. Tolhurst, S. Coradine, H. E. Pither, E. J. Coleman, H. P. Glen, Miss J. McLaren. The president (Miss Kummer) welcomed Mrs S. L. P. Free back after a trip to California. Letters were received from the Hospital Board thanking the League for obtaining Miss Brockett to teach the crippled children. Mrs R. Whyborn will also give knitting instructions to these children. Miss Kummer reported that the Public Hospital had been visited twice during August. Literature, cakes and tea were provided for those in No. 6 Ward. The visitors for September will be Mesdames T. Jordan, F. Daniell and Kilgour, and for September 20 Mesdames S. L. P. Free and S. Fletcher. On the motion of Mrs Munn it was decided that a visit be paid to the Buchanan Home in the second week of October subject to the matron’s approval. The secretary reported that a donation of £5 had been received from the T. G. McCarthy Trust. It was decided to thank the board of governors for the donation. The League forwarded to the Buchanan Home a large number of woollen caps and bed socks for which the matron thanked the League members. Miss Kummer reported that a number of residents were knitting garments for the children of Public Hospital. A discussion on immigration was held oyer till next meeting. It was decided that a speaker address the League at its next meeting. Miss Kummer is to make arrangements in connection therewith.
