PHYSICAL RECREATION

TWO SCHOLARSHIPS PROVIDED BY U.S.A. UNIVERSITY (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, September 2. Two scholarships designed to train young men in the best ways of administering physical recreation schemes are to be offered to New Zealanders by Mr. A. L. Fitch, professional athlectics coach, who arrived at Auckland by the Monterey from San Francisco to take up training duties with the Wellington and Canterbury centres of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. The scholarships have been provided by the University of Southern California, and will include four years’ specialised training at the University. The value of each is about 1200 dollars, or about £3OO, but the selected men will be asked to pay their own fare to the United States. Mr. Fitch said he hoped two youhg men of about student teacher age might be selected this year so they could proceed to the university almost straight away. He did not know how the scheme would appeal to New Zealanders since physical recreation teaching could scarcely be called a profession in New Zealand, but he hoped the scholarships might be able to assist the Government's physical welfare plans.
