NOTES FOR THE WAIRARAPA DISTRICT MEASURES TO CONTROL . DISEASE. SMALL FRUIT CULTURE. Mr M. Davey, Government orchard instructor, Masterton, supplies the following information regarding management of domestic orchards and small fruit culture: Domestic Orchards. Control of Black Spot, Golden Moth, Leech, etc: Apples and Pears: Bordeaux powder 11b in 12 gallons water, third or fourth week in August. Middle of October: Lime sulphure 1 pint in 12 gallons water. First week in November: Lime sulphur 3 pint in 12 gallons plus 4oz. powdered Arsenate of Lead in 12 gallons, repeat every three weeks until second week in January. Stone fruit: Bordeaux Powder 11b in 12 gallons when leaves are falling off in May. Repeat again at bud movement in Spring. Spray Colloidal Sulphur 4oz in 12 gallons, November, December and again just before fruit ripens. Control of San Jose Scale: Spray Emulsified Red Oil, 1 gallon in 15 gallons of water, third week in August. Repeat within 10 days. Hot sunny weather should be selected for application. Small Fruit Culture. Raspberries: Cane Blight and Leaf Spot control: Cut out diseased canes, autumn delayed dormant Bordeaux 3.4.50. Repeat twice subsequently to prevent disease spreading to new canes. Spraying must cease when blossoms show colour. Bud Moth: Spray arsenate of lead powder 21b-1001b early spring and repeat when fruit has been harvested. Black Currants: San Jose Scale: Control by spraying lime sulphur I—ls1 —15 followed by Oil Emulsion I—ls1 —15 at delayed dormant. Leaf Spot control: Lime sulphur I—ls.1 —15. Eel Worm: Nb recommendations can be made at the moment as Plant Research Bureau is investigating. Gooseberries: Botrytis. Spray bordeaux 3.4.50 at delayed dormant. Manures: The best manure is organic, suggest fowl manure which, if available, at rate of lib per plant applied during dormant season, or fish manure, dried blood, meat meal, or blood and bone 2-3 cwt per acre, or synthetic fertiliser, 60 per cent super—--30 per cent B. and B. 10 per cent sulphate of potash.
