HERD TESTING

PAHAUTEA GROUP ANNUAL MEETING. SURVEY BY THE CHAIRMAN. The annual meeting of the Pahautea Herd Testing Group was held on Wednesday, Mr C. Bergh presiding over a good attendance of members. The fourth annual report, presented by the chairman, states: —“You are aware that the past season, climatically, was not as satisfactory from a dairying point of view as the previous season, yet, notwithstanding this, the average for the group has been well maintained; the average being 263.841 b fat in 252 days with an average per day of 1.04. The group average for the 1936-37 season was 268.461 b fat in 255 days with the same average per day, 1.04. This compares very satisfactorily with the Wairarapa Herd Testing Association’s average of 263.541 b fat in 247 days, with an average per day of 1.06; but upon inspecting the analysis of the individual cows of our group (as set out hereunder) it will be seen that there is still room for great improvement.

“Analysis of per cow butterfat production: —Cows returning 50-991 b fat, 7; 100-1491 b fat, 31; 150-1991 b fat, 107; 2002491 b fat, 164; 250-299 lb fat, 190; 3003491 b fat, 136; 350-3991 b fat, 66; 4004991 b fat, 24; 450-4991 b fat, 2; 550-5991 b fat, 2. It will be found that there are from 200 to 250 unprofitable cows out of 729 cows included in the annual average and if this big percentage of poor producers were replaced with good producing animals it would ben- 1 efit all concerned.

“Most noticeable is the decrease in the number of herds under test and this is depressing to officers connected with the movement, especially when the butterfat average has been so well maintained and taking into consideration that this season “B” class cows were included in the average. Still, it is hoped that the approaching season will be a good one for our group and members.”
