BADMINTON TOURNEY

HAWKSWORTH IN FINE FORM BRILLIANTLY DEFEATS LEWIS. HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HAMILTON, This Day. The badminton championships were continued last night in the Bledisloe Hall. The play was considered the best yet seen at any tournament, and many exciting games were witnessed. In the A grade, the holder Hawksworth, was in fine form and played brilliantly to beat J. D. Lewis (Auckland), smashing powerfully and producing every stroke cleanly. Hawksworth must enter the final at least. R. Lewis, the Waikato and Auckland title holder, defeated Vesty (Hawke’s Bay) and Sheerin (Manawatu) last night and will now meet H. H. Fow, holder of the 1934 title, in the semifinal. Fow is in his best form for several years, but Lewis is also playing fine badminton. He defeated Fow in the Auckland championships recently. Fow played excellently to beat Pearce, of Wellington. In the woman’s section Miss Edmondson eliminated Mrs P. Hawksworth. (Masterton) from the singles, while Miss Kerr (holder). Miss Fleming (Wellington), and Miss Ramsay (Auckland) are other semi-finalists. The standard here has been very high and there is little between many of the competitors. The Hamilton pair, H. H. Fow and R. Fear, the previous holders of the men’s doubles, were eliminated by Whale and Anderson (Auckland). Pearce and Hawksworth, showing fine combination. are still in the doubles, while the Lewis brothers are also in this section. Hawksworth and Mrs Hawksworth, the holders of the combined doubles, won their match last night, and in the second round Pearce and Miss Keneliminated Fow and Mrs Fow. The brightest badminton in the men’s doubles and the best match was that in which R. and J. Lewis beat G. Dunn and Pay ton.
