SUGGESTED BY BRITAIN
HERR HENLEIN’S VISIT TO HITLER ACCORDING TO SUDETEN SPOKESMAN. EARLY PARTY MEETING EXPECTED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 9.25 a.m.) PRAGUE, September, 1. A Sudeten spokesman stated that Herr Henlein’s visit to Herr Hitler had been suggested by Britain. Herr Henlein will be back in Prague on Saturday and probably will call an immediate meeting of party leaders. CLOSE WATCH HOPES OF MORE POSITIVE ACTION IN APPROACHING PEACEFUL SETTLEMENT (British Official Wireless.) (Recd This Day, 11.12 a.m.) RUGBY, September 1. The situation in Central Europe continues to engage the close attention of Great Britain. It is felt in London that the resumption of negotiations in Prague is urgently required to relieve the gathering tension, and Press reports of today’s interviews between Dr Benes and Viscount Runciman on the one hand, and Herr Hitler and Herr Henlein on the other, are, it is hoped, the prelude to a most positive phase in the search by the two sides in Czechoslovakia for an agreed settlement! of their differences. A Press message received in London from Berchtesgaden reports that Herr Henlein arrived at Herr Hitler’s residence at Obersalzberg and attended a conference with Herr Hitler at which Marshal Goering, Dr Goebbels and Herr Hess were present. It may authoritatively be stated that Herr Henlein’s visit to Herr Hitler is at Lord Runciman’s request. It is understood that Lord Runciman is impressed by Herr Henlein’s genuine desire for a peaceful settlement, and his object in asking Herr Henlein to deliver a message at Berchtesgaden is to secure the support of Herr Hitler for continuance of negotiations between Czechoslovakia and the Sudetens.
