NAVAL CONSTRUCTION PLANS IN U.S.A. TREMENDOUS FIGHTING FLEET TOTALLING 272 WARSHIPS By Telegraph —Press Association. Copyright. WASHINGTON, August 30. After consulting President Roosevelt, Admiral Leahy, Chief of the Naval Staff, indicated today that the navy would probably seek an additional 200,000,000-dollar appropriation from Congress owing to the added cost of implementing the billion-dollar expansion programme. In an article in the “Army and Navy Journal,” Mr Claude A. Swanson, Secretary of the Navy, reveals that the fleet will comprise 272 fighting ships, totalling 1,517,480 tons, including 18 battleships, 18 heavy cruisers, 28 light cruisers, eight aircraftcarriers, 144 destroyers, and 56 submarines.
