FISH HATCHERIES
BUSY SEASON AHEAD. REARING AND DISTRIBUTION OF FRY. Operations at the Masterton .. Fish Hatcheries for the rearing of a large number of fry for distribution in the Wellington district rivers are well under way. So far there are 620,000 brown fry and 100,000 rainbow in the hatcheries while 900,000 brown and 300,000 rainbow have yet to come to hand. The distribution of fry decided on by the Wellington Acclimatisation Society this year is as follows: Brown, Pahiatua 115,000; Eketahuna 75,000; Palmerston North 85,000; Tokomaru 12,000; Masterton 150,000; South Wairarapa 50,000; Hutt 67,000; Akatarawa 35,000; Mangaroa 23,000; Martin’s River 20,000; Little Wainui 6,000; Pukuratahi 17,000; Wainuiomatu 30,000; Horokuri 10,000; Pahautanui 10,000; Ohariu 6,000; Porirua 6,000; Otaki and tributories 86,000; Waikanae and tributaries 35,000; Taihape 80,000; Levin 72,000; Feilding 150,000; total 1,150,000. Rainbow: Pahiatua 60,000; Horowhenua 25,000; Rangitikei lakes, 75,000; Rangitikei River 100,000; Wainuiomatu Dam 3,000; Pounui Lake 4,000; Smith’s Lake, Levin 3,000; Hammond’s Lake, Rangitikei. 4,000; Otaki 40,000; Kourarau Dam, 2,000; Whakataki 10,000; Pohangina 20,000; Mangahao 20,000; Ruamahanga, above Mt Bruce, 20,000; total 400,000. A fine new concrete pond for the accommodation of yearlings, construced by anglers of the district, is now almost completed. It is 100 feet in length and 7 feet wide and will provide a valuable addition to the equipment of the hatchery.
