NAPIER DISPUTE

SUSPENSION OF LIGHTERING BOARD CHAIRMAN RETICENT (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NAPIER, August 31. “The Board is not to be drawn by tactics so harmful to the district as those followed by its opponents,” said the deputy-chairman of the Napier Harbour Board, Mr E. J. Herrick, today, when asked to comment on the dispute which has arisen at Port Ahuriri resulting in the suspension of the lightering service. “The true facts,” said Mr Herrick, “will be published after the Marine Department’s investigation which is being made. I may emphasise that at the special request of the board in the meantime and with a full sense of responsibility, I say there are no grounds for the statements that have been made.” Mr L. B. Campbell, secretary of the Marine Department, has arrived i at Napier, and has begun an investigation on behalf of the department. • ■ Mr K. McLeay, managing director of Richardson and Company, said today that his company saw no chance of doing any more lightering for some time and had served notice terminating their engagement with the company of 20 permanent hands, consisting of lighter men, master and shore hands, directly concerned in lightering work. Some of the men have been in the company’s employ for long periods.
