PICTURES AND PLAYERS ON PARADE LAUREL AND HARDY SPLIT PARTNERSHIP. ALLEGATION AND DENIAL. The famous Laurel and Hardy team has split, the studio accusing Laurel lof refusing to take part in “retakes” |of the current comedy, “Blockheads.” Laurel denies the charges. He says that the studio permitted his absence from the city. It is reported that Harry Langdon, famous comedian of the silent screen, who was recently reported to be in financial difficulties, may replace him.
gossiped and written the same thing a score of times before. They have not been right yet—but you never can tell. The rumour this time is that Warners are persuading Miss Bergner to play in “We Are Not Alone” their adaption of James Hilton’s novel. The bait held out to tempt Elizabeth is that Ronald Colman might co-star (but that has yet to be fixed). Colman and Miss Bergner would be a mighty boxoffice attraction—if the deal ever did come off. Deanna’s “Mother.” Lovely Irene Rich, at 46, returns to the screen as Deanna Durbin’s mother in “That Certain Age,” the young star’s latest film. Miss Rich was a famous star in the silent films and appeared in several talkies, notably with the late Will Rogers. Her screen husband in “That Certain Age” will be that dignied gentleman, John Halliday. Deanna’s second, and, according to many people, her greatest picture, “100 Men and a Girl” commences a return season at the
Regent Theatre next Wednesday. Adolphe Menjou appears as Deanna’s musician father, Mischa Auer as the comic flautist, Alice Brady as the fluttering society woman, Frank Jenks as the singing taxi-driver and Leopold Stokowski and his Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra as the great musicians they truly are. Some Stocking Bill!
No girl has ever had the stocking problem that confronts Sonja Henie. During the two months she worked on her latest film, “Happy Landing” the stockings she wore in the skating numbers set the studio back 2,100 dollars. The stockings really constitute a pair of tights, since they are of extra length and are sewn together at the hips. They cost 35 dollars a pair, and several pairs are worn out in a' day’s skating. Altogether there were about three weeks of actual skating in costume and during that period five dozen oairs of tights were used. After Miss Henie has executed several of her amazing ice tricks, immense runs develop in the stockings and they have to >e thrown out. “Happy Landing” comnences its Masterton season at the State Theatre on Friday of next week.
