WORK FOR THE WEEK
VEGETABLE GARDEN.
Early Peas, Beans, Carrots, Onions, Spinach and Beet can be sown. Make sowings of Cabbage and Cauliflower. Brussels Sprouts and Brocolli need a long season of growth and should be sown early. All plants of the Cabbage tribe should be'transplanted at least twice before planting out permanently. Make a sowing of Parsnips. They need to be sown early. Plant Potatoes. Sprout the sets before planting. Discard those with thread-like shoots. Sow Lettuce. A little protection is advisable for seedlings in early spring. Mustard and Cress can be sown. Use fresh soil each time. Mustard should be ready in six days, Cress in fourteen. Prepare ground and plant autumn-sown Onions. Ground for a spring sowing of Onions should be prepared. While the soil is wet it is better to defer the sowings until more favourable conditions. Dig in green manuring crops, in plenty of time to allow of decay before planting or sowing. Ground intended for cabbage and allied crops should be dressed with lime. Asparagus beds'which were given a dressing of manure last autumn should now have the residue raked off into the alleys. FLOWER GARDEN. Lift and divide border perennials soon as possible. Cuttings of Michaelmas Daisies and perennial Phlox can be taken as soon as the shoots are a few inches long. Cinerarias can be planted out in a frost-free position. Any blanks in the spring bedding should be filled in. If losses are great, lift and replant Cuttings of scarlet and ivy-leaved Geraniums root readily now. Young plants of Geraniums and and Marguerites are much the best. They can be rooted quite easily in sandy soil. It is essential to keep surface soil loose around bulbs and other spring flowering subjects. Plant Roses. Any spraying or pruning left should be done at once. Gladioli can be planted {when ground is suitable. FRUIT GARDEN. Spraying of fruit trees should be finished as soon as possible. Clean up prunings and weeds around trees. Any planting should be done as soon as possible. The Strawberry bed should be cleaned and soil stirred around the plants. Give a dressing of blood and bone.
