NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION. COUNCIL’S ANNUAL MEETING. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) TIMARU, August 30. The annual meeting of the council of the New Zealand Basketball Association began this afternoon. Mrs H. D. Muir, Wellington, welcomed 33 delegates and presented the annual report, which showed the accumulated fund to be £641. The profit last year was £lO. Acknowledging- complimentary references to the work of the president and executive, Mrs Muir referred to the recent visit of a basketball team to Australia, and said they had returned with many suggestions about rules. It was the first, occasion on which a New Zealand team had visited Australia, and they found they had many things to learn. Although the team had not met great success in the bigger centres, Sydney and Melbourne papers had given high praise to the girls for their clean play and quickness and the gracefulness of their game. The Australians had been full in their admiration. of the way the New Zealanders had played. Considering the Australians had a somewhat different code of rules, the New Zealanders had done really well. They had a lot to learn, however, and she thought the executive would do well to consider what was required and what was expected from future touring teams. The conference decided that no player playing at a New Zealand tournament may referee there. It was agreed that in wet weather players at tournaments be allowed at their own discretion to wear on their hands and feet suitable equipment to facilitate play. It was also agreed that ankle boots be worn. The 1939 tournament is to be held in Invercargill. Officers were elec> d as follows: — Patron, Viscountess Galway; president, Mrs H. D. Muir, Wellington; secretary and treasurer, Mrs R. M. Smith, Wellington. Twenty-three teams from all over the Dominion are to participate in the New Zealand championships, which will begin at Caroline Bay tomorrow.
