STRIKE DEBATE
ALL MINES IDLE FOR DAV IN N.S.W. LEADERS GIVEN FREE HAND. ACTION ENDORSED IN OTHER STATES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. SYDNEY, August 30. All coal mines in New South Wales were idle today for aggregate meetings to determine whether the general strike should be precipitated in accordance with the decision reached at the recent convention. , Complete authority was given to the miners’ leaders to declare the strike if necessary. ' Mr William Orr, general secretary of the Miners’ Federation, addressed miners at Kurri today. He said that the mine owners’ stocks of coal would last only weeks, not months, as was claimed. Reports from Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania state that the miners have endorsed the proposal for a general strike. The New South Wales Coal Miners’ Convention decided on August 11 to order the restriction of output of coal from all mines and so prevent the accumulation of stocks by gas companies, railways and other large official and private undertakings which are anticipating a protracted strike.
