JAPANESE LOOSE FULL FORCE OF ARMY Attempt to Break Down Defences of Hankow IMPORTANT GAINS MADE NORTH OF YANGTSE By Telegraph.—Press Association. —Copyright. (Received This Day, 10.5 a.m.) SHANGHAI, August 30. The Japanese announce that they have loosed the full force of their army at four points and made an important advance, threatening the collapse of the entire Chinese defences of Hankow. The fronts in the struggle for Hankow cover five provinces. The Japanese capture of Fenglingtu, Liuan and Hwoshan is officially admitted. An artillery duel between the Chinese and Japanese is proceeding at Tungkwan. The Chinese claim that they are holding their own south of the Yangtse, having repulsed with heavy loss, Japanese attacks west of Juichang and also onslaughts at Shaho and Poyang, but the Japanese claim that they have gained control of the north bank of the Yellow River for a distance of sixty miles, capturing Changwangtsun, threatening Kwangtsi and entering the Hupeh Province. Japanese planes attacked Shiukwan, slightly damaged the railway and killed many civilians.
MURDEROUS RAID. THOUSANDS OF CIVILIANS KILLED AND WOUNDED. HANKOW, August 30. Thousands of civilians were killed and wounded when 50 Japanese planes dropped 200 bombs, mostly incendiary, on Kingshan, 80 miles north-west of Hankow, today. Seven hundred houses were destroyed.
