MEAL FROM SEAWEED
USE AS COW FODDER. EXPERIMENTS IN ICELAND. Experiments have been carried out under Government auspices during the past three years at Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland, with the aim of producing meal from seaweed (tangmeal) for the feeding of cows. These experiments are now reported to have been successful, the result being a resolution to erect a special factory at Hvervellir, about 25 miles from Reykjavik, for the production of tangmeal. An advantage of this particular site is that there are many hot springs in this district which will be utilised for heating and drying the material. For a start the factory is designed for a daily output of two tons of meal, and a concession for a term of 10 years is being granted by the Icelandic Government to a private company floated to operate the new industry. This development should be watched with interest by New Zealanders who, at many points on the coast, have abundant supplies of seaweed, and if the meal has the virtues claimed for it as a food for cows, and pigs#m almost unlimited market may be found in our own Dominion, where minerals, such as those found in sea growths greatly benefit the stock.
