PORK PRODUCTION
PROTEIN SUPPLIES NEEDED. In discussing the pig-raising and fattening industry in Australia, Dr John Hammond says: “On the production side, pork is most suitable for grassland areas in which few cereals are grown, for the dairy industry supplies skim milk in plsnty, but supplies of cereals are usually more expensive (as in New Zealand). “Pork is marketed at low weights (68-80 and 80-1001 b carcase weight), and during this stage of early growth high proteins in the food are required, which can be supplied by milk. “On the other hand, the bacon pig must be grown to heavier weights (1351691 b carcase weight for the English market) and does not require such high protein feed, so that this type can be produced economically where cereals are available these being supplemented in the early stages of growth by dairy by-products, if available, or by purchased meat meal (as in Western Canada).”
