YOUNG PIG MORTALITY

ABUNDANT FOOD NEEDED. A booklet published recently in Finland elaborates the causes of mortality among young pigs. One of the reasons, the writers says, why so many pigs are born dead, and a still larger numberdie within the first week, is because the mother is unable to feed them properly, both before and immediately after birth. When sows near farrowing are kept on poor pasture or fern with little additional food and minerals, there is no need to look further for the cause. To obtain good autumn litters, rich pasture for the sows during summer, with sufficient additional food when the grass gets scarce, is necessary.
