CHILLED BEEF TRADE
DISADVANTAGES OF CROSSING. The competition for , chiller steers carried through under the auspices of the Wanganui Agricultural Association resulted in notable victories for the Aberdeen-Angus, which won the challenge cup as the best carcase. Stock from Mr Frank Armstrong’s Akitio stud, Hawke’s Bay, were most successful. On the hoof they won first, second, third, fifth, sixth and seventh places.’ At the works they repeated these successes, and, when sent to Smithfield for the final adjudication, the first, second and fourth placings were again awarded t 6 them. This is a remarkable performance, especially taking into account the fact that there were 45 entries. It also confirms the opinion of many beef cattle breeders that the purebred Aberdeen-Angus is a completely satisfactory animal both for our Dominion conditions and for the overseas chiller trade. Although its crosses with other breeds are good, it is questionable if any advantage in quality is secured by crossing, while many obvious disadvantages, including loss of type in breeding, may result.
