In a match at Petone on Saturday, in which Red Star thirds defeated the Petone thirds by 6 points to 4, C. Reid kicked two penalty goals for Red Star and J. Corbham potted a goal for Petone. After the game the teams were entertained at a dinner by the Petone Club, the usual toasts being honoured. A return game will be played in Masterton on Saturday. PEARSON CUP CARTERTON v. OPAKI (By “Touchline”) Played at Carterton on Saturday, this gamed ended in a draw, 6 points all. The result- was a fair indication of the strength of the teams, but Opaki should have won, as Allen should have been awarded a try. Both teams included new players, Jackson, last season representative full-back, playing for Carterton, and Ngatuere brothers for Opaki. Right from the kick off it was a solid go. Carterton started off in great style, and before the whites could combine, they were busy defending, and, but for. Hunt’s fine work, things would have been serious. Steffert on one occasion worked the blind side to send Salsbury over at the corner flag. Jackson failded with the kick. Changes in Opaki’s backs were made to advantage, and it was now their turn at attack, Jeffcoat and Norman leading the forwards in fine dribbling rushes. From one of these, an infringement gave Hunt a chance to equalise, which he did. Although both sides tried hard, there was no further score in the first half. On resuming, Clarke went to half, and it made a gonderful improvement. When he saw an opening, he dribbled through in great style, often beating Stiffert and Deller. After about 20 minutes of even play, Norman sent a long kick upfield. Jeffcoat and Hargood followed up smartly, the former kicking past Linehan. Hargood outpaced all the others to dribble over and score a try, Hunt’s kick hit the crossbar. Within a short time, Clarke came through with ball at toe, being joined by Allen and H. Chapel. The former picked up and streaked for the line to ground the ball at the corner. Salsbury in endeavouring to tackle him, knocked the flag over. The referee, seeing the flag down, naturally gave a touch in goal. Carterton were awarded a free kick, Jackson sending the ball oyer the bar. This was the final score. Carterton forwards played splendidly Alexander, Rayner and Geange, being very conspicuous. Steffert, Barrington and Salsbury, were in good form, and Jackson was very safe. The Opaki forwards were euqal to Carterton; Jeffcoat, Norman, Taplin and H. Chapel, being outstanding in loose work. Godden, Seymour, Oliver and Wallace were solid in the scrum Clarke was the best back on the ground, and Allen was right back to his old form. Hunt’s display was excellent. Hargood’s pace was responsible for a fine try. Ngature brothers and A. Chapel were very safe. Mr P Reid controlled the game.
