CORONATION SOUVENIR
EVENT OF HUNDRED YEARS AGO. The Museum of Locomotion at Compiegne has a souvenir of Queen Victoria’s coronation a hundred years ago in the shape of a strip engraving, about fifteen feet by four inches wide. Beautifully engraved, this strip shows the whole procession, and every personage is faithfully reproduced and easily recognisable. The Duke of Wellington rode in this procession in the same carriage with Marshal Soult, his enemy of many a battle. Another souvenir of Queen Victoria in this museum is the small open carriage which she used on her many visits to Cimiez, above Nice, where she went year after year to seek rest and health during the winter months. In the same museum there is a campaigning carriage of Napoleon I. Apart from these historic souvenirs, the Musee de la Voiture of Compiegne contains specimens of every kind of road conveyance, from the Roman chariot to the motor car of today, and even the railway has its place in this museum, one of the latest additions being the first “Micheline” railcar.
