FEATHERSTON

FAREWELL SOCIAL. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr and Mrs W. Russell, 1 who will shortly leave to reside in Hamilton, were tendered a valedictory social by the residents of Kahutara on Thursday evening. Mr Russell has been head teacher of the Kahutara School for a number of years and during his residence there, he, with Mrs Russell, have identified themselves with the social and sporting activities of the district. Mr and Mrs Russell were prominent members of the Tennis Club and Wairarapa Golf Club, while the latter also took a keen interest in the work of the Women’s Institute. Both were the recipients of many tokens of esteem from the various organisations they had been connected with. The following gave items: Mr H. Graham (humorous recitation), Miss O. Harvey (sailor’s hornpipe), Mr Don Sutherland (Irish jig). Two little Maori girls sang in their native tongue. During the evening Mr Play el, chairman of the school committee, presented Mr Russell with a handsome chiming oak clock. Mr Silmonk, on behalf of the tennis club, presented Mr Russell with a case of pipes, Mrs Russell with a silver cake stand and Baby Russell with a silver mug. Mrs Russell was given two posies, one from senior scholars and others from junior children. Among the visitors were Mr and Mrs Jolly (Wanganui), a former teacher at Kahutara. Mr Russell expressed his deep appreciation for the handsome gifts and kind remarks made concerning Mrs Russell and himself. He regretted leaving the district where they both had spent many happy years. On Tuesday Mrs P. Duffy, on behalf of the Kahutara Drama Circle, presented Mrs Russell with a beautiful ornament. Mrs Russell had been an ardent member since the inception of the Institute. Afternoon tea was much enjoyed by all.

SCOUT PARTY. ■ The Featherston Scout Troop held a social in the scout den on Thursday night when a number of parents and friends were entertained with amusing competitions, games and musical items. The concluding item was the Camp Fire, when Acting-Scout Master Phil Clark accompanied the singing on his piano accordian. Patrol Leader L. Robinson gave a mouth organ solo. Apologies for absence were received from Mr N. C. C. Shepherd (Wairarapa District Commissioner) and Mr J. Halpin (Group-Scout Master).

EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE. The South Featherston euchre tournament and dance was well attended on Thursday night. The winners of euchre were: Ladies, Mrs R. Fuge 1, Mrs Mellish 2. Men, Mr R. Jepson 1, Mr H. Fenwick 2. Mr and Mrs F. Burt and Mr Rae and Miss Cole were the winners in the Monte Carlo.
