MR DANNY MALONE
EXCELLENT CONCERT AT OPERA HOUSE. In these days of talking pictures and a host of other attractions, the flesh-and-blood artist is greatly neglected. That no doubt was the major reason for the smallness of thefaudience which greeted Mr Danny Malone, the Irish radio tenor and assisting artists in the OperaHouse, Masterton, last night. Mr Malone has a charming voice, remarkably free from the “word-mang-ling” that is all too often found in tenor singers. Another remarkable feature of Mr Malone’s singing is his interpretation of his songs, which are mostly ballads of his native Ireland. Without any strain, his voice'expresses, the -sentiment of the songs, with delightful light and shade. All his items met with well-merited applause. A high standard of instrumental music was provided by Robert and Eileen Emmett O’Carroll, at the violin and harp respectively. Both artists showed fine control of their instruments. Among their most popular numbers were selections of Irish, Scottish, Gipsy and Maori airs. Further variety was furnished by Mr Ted Pratt, his banjo and voice, although his presentation immediately after Mr Malone’s soothing ballads, of a particularly boisterous type of song was inclined to spoil the effect of the latter’s singing. Mr Pratt also told a joke or two and led a short community sing. A special word of praise is due to Mr Ken Lehmann, who played Mr Malone’s .accompaniments with sympathy and understanding.
