CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION
DISTRICT DIVIDED INTO ZONES PROVINCIAL AND DISTRICT MEMORIALS At the meeting of the Wellington Provincial Centennial Committee, held in Wellington yesterday, the district was divided into zones, and it was arranged that meetings should be held of all local bodies in each of these zones to discuss, first of all, the setting up of a provincial centennial memorial for the whole of the Wellington province, and secondly, the setting up of any local or district memorials. In each case, it was pointed out, a Government subsidy of £1 for every £3 subscribed was available. According to information given to. the meeting, it is clearly to be understood that no memorial will be subsidised if it is some part of the ordinary work of a local body. It is not expected that the money for these mem- - orials will be found out of local body funds, but rather by individual subscriptions by the inhabitants to commemorate the first hundred years of life of the community. DOMINION COURT AMENDED SCHEME FAVOURED In regard to the provincial court, a meeting of the Wellington Provincial Court executive was also held yesterday, when the amended scheme of the directors of the exhibition was presented to provide for a Dominion Court for the whole of New Zealand in place of a number of provincial courts directed individually and without reference to any general scheme. General agreement was expressed with the amended proposal provided the distinctive features of the Wellington Province were included in the Dominion scheme, and no further expense was imposed upon the contributing local bodies. The estimated expenditure of the original court was £12,000, and the secretary reports yesterday that between £lO,OOO and £ll,OOO had already been agreed to by local bodies. The proposed Dominion Court would have an area of about 63,000 square feet, and of that area it was proposed to allocate to the Wellington province a total floor space of 10,750 square feet. A letter was read from the directors of the Exhibition intimating that they proposed to call a conference of representatives of each of the provincial committees not later'than the middle of September to discuss the court further, and the two members named to represent the Wellington Provincial Committee were the chairman, Mr D. E. Pattrick and Mr T. Jordan, Mayor of Masterton.
