AFTER HOURS
CARTERTON LICENSEE BEFORE COURT. CONVICTION ENTERED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The sequel to an unexpected visit by the Carterton police to the Royal Oak Hotel was heard in the Carterton Magistrate’s Court yesterday when four charges were preferred against the licensee, Albert E. Izzard. Senior-Sergeant G. A. Doggett agreed to withdraw two of the charges relating to exposing liquor for sale and for opening the premises for the sale of liquor. Although he first objected on the grounds that the charge was brought as a warning to other licensees, the Senior-Sergeant later ■ also agreed to’withdraw a charge of having allowed liquor to be consumed on the premises after hours. After the police had arrived, he stated, two men found on the premises had drunk their beer. The Senior-Sergeant said that about 0.30 p.m. on August 12, Constables Robertson and Watson had visited the Royal Oak Hotel. The front door was open and when Izzard opened the bar door there were two men standing at the bar. Both had full glasses of beer in front of them. Mr D. L. Taverner, who appeared for Izzard, .said that one of the men concerned was a taxi driver who, in response to a telephone call, had come to take the licensee to an entertainment in town. He had brought the other person with him. It was quite a human and natural thing for the licensee to offer them a drink before they went into town. The Senior-Sergeant said he pointed out that the taxi was parked at the rear of the hotel and that one of the persons in the hotel had admitted shouting the drinks. Mr Lawry convicted and fined Izzard £3 and 10s costs. The two men found on the premises, John H. Steffert and Herbert Swain were convicted and fined £1 and 10s costs for being on licensed premises after hours. ■
