FATALLY INJURED
AIR PIONEER & PASSENGER. WHILE TESTING NEW TYPE OF SMALL PLANE. NEW YORK, August 23. A message from Buffalo says that Captain Frank Hawks was fatally injured when his “Aircar,” a new type of small aircraft, crashed when taking off on a demonstration flight yesterday. The plane struck some telegraph wires and burst into flames. Captain Hawks and his passenger, Mr J. Hazard Campbell, received fatal burns. Mr Campbell was a noted sportsman. Captain Hawks once said: “I expect to die in an aeroplane and won’t feel happy if I don’t.” Farmers pluckily pulled the men from the flames, an exploding fire-ex-tinguisher adding to the danger. The “Aircar” was the latest attempt to promote cheap flying. It was burned out.
