CARTERTON

FRIENDLY SOCIETIES COUNCIL. (“Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the Carterton United Friendly Societies Council was held in the Foresters’ Hall last evening. There were present Bros E. McKenzie (presiding), D. T. King, R. Smith, G. Babbitts, C. J. De Lacey, A. J. Lindop, C. Moore, W. Steven, and the secretary, J. M. Nicholls. Dr W. J. C. Wells, surgeon to the lodges, notified that he would be leaving Carterton on September 28 for England, and that a locum tenens would take up his practice during his absence from New Zealand, which would extend over a period of nine to twelve months. It was decided that the fchairman approach Dr Wells as to the approximate date of the arrival of his locum tenens and that if time permits ’ a farewell function be tendered to Dr and Mrs W. J. C. Wells and give a welcome to the new doctor. A further meeting of members of the council will be held on Thursday, September 1. •' . The funeral of the late Miss Blanche Blatchford, of High Street, Carterton, took place yesterday at the Clareville Cemetery in the presence of a large gathering of friends and relations from all parts of the Wairarapa. A profusion of beautiful wreaths was sent, giving evidence of the high esteem in which Miss Blatchford was held, including one from the outside staff of the Carterton Borough Council. The pall-bearers were Messrs Norman and Fred Blatchford, N. Wyeth, M. Williams, R, Hughan and H. Barton. The Rev. H. ;White, .of the Methodist Church, conducted a service at the house and also read the burial service at the graveside,' ' EUCHRE TOURNEY. There was an excellent attendance at the euchre tourney, held under the auspices of the St. Mary’s Church in the hall last evening. The winners of the various prizes were:—Mrs Edwards and Mr Paterson first prizes, Mrs H. Hodder and Mr Humphries second prizes. Special prizes were awarded to Miss Bailey, Mrs Williams and Mr Fryer. PERSONAL.Mr Kruse, who has been manager of the Carterton District Co-operative Store will be leaving the district as he has received another appointment. Mrs Kruse has been closely associated with the success of St. Mary’s Church euchre tourneys and she will be greatly missed by the committee responsible for running the tournaments.
