POWER TRANSMISSION
REMARKABLE INVENTION SUBMITTED TO SCIENCE CONGRESS. APPLICATION TO MOTOR-CAR. (Recd This Day. 1.50 p.m.) LONDON, August 22. A. power transmitter combining the functions of both clutch and gearbox was described by Mr F. C. Lea, at the Science Congress, in a paper dealing with an invention by Pietro Salerni, a London Italian who declares that he will not give a monopoly to any country. The principle is also applicable to steam turbines. The invention replaces the gear-box by a centrifugal pump, driven by an engine, and pumping oil to a turbine containing reaction elements. The turbine conveys the power so developed to a driving shaft. Everything is regulated from an accelerator. The only other gadget is a reverse lever. Scientists tested a car which Mr Lea stated had undergone tests over- 65.000 miles. It does twenty-one miles to the gallon, starts readily with a full load on a one in four grade and shows surprising acceleration.
