GOLF IN RAIN

CONTEST FOR AUSTRALIAN WOMEN’S TITLE ONE NEW ZEALANDER LEFT IN RUNNING MRS FULLERTON-SMITH BEATEN BY YOUNG PLAYER By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. SYDNEY, August 22. The surprise of the first round of the match play in the Australian women’s open golf championship today was the defeat of Mrs Fullerton-Smith at the hands of a young Sydney player, Miss B. Crago. Miss J. Horwell was also eliminated and Miss V. Fleming is now New Zealand’s only representative. The matches were played in torrential rain and on a sodden course. Results are: — Miss B. Crago beat Mrs FullertonSmith, 5 and 4. Miss J. Lewis (Victoria) beat Miss J. Horwell, 4 and 2. Miss V. Fleming beat Miss M. Rankin, 5 and 4. Miss Sydney-Jones beat Miss G. Stark, 5 and 3. Mis Kernot beat Miss M. Corry, 3 and 2. Mrs C. Robinsbn beat Miss G. Gardiner, 5 and 3. Miss V. Ebert beat Mrs Hore, 6 and 5. Mrs T. McKay beat Mrs Clements, 5 and 3. Mrs Fullerton-Smith was completely out of touch. She appeared to be forcing her shots, a number of which she topped, especially spoons and long irons. She was three down at the fourth, but won the fifth and eighth to turn one down. Miss Crago, however, secured par figures at the next five holes, four of which she won. Miss Horwell’s defeat can be attributed partly to her bad putting and partly to her opponent’s fine play. She took three putts on five greens. She was also short occasionally with her approaches and paid the full penalty in bunkers. Miss Lewis reached the turn in 38, two over par, to be three up, and went on to a comfortable win. Miss Fleming was untroubled by the conditions. She played very* steadily, if not brilliantly, throughout. As in the Tasman Cup last Friday, her approach putts were extraordinarily accurate. She turned four up and made her tally five up at the eleventh, the match ending on the fourteenth green. Miss Fleming meets Mrs Robinson, former Australian open champion, tomorrow.
