RUGBY FOOTBALL
SCHOOLS TOURNAMENT. WON BY DANNEVIRKE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DANNEVIRKE, August 22. By beating Hutt Valley 22-12 in the final today, Dannevirke, for the third time in succession, won the annual Rugby tournament between College, Wellington, Wairarapa College, Hutt Valley High School and Dannevirke High School. In the other game today Wairarapa beats Scots 14-9. Through injuries the Wairarapa pack was considerably changed. Scots played with greater dash and vigour than on Saturday and the defence was much sounder and kept Wairarapa’s heavy and powerful backs in check. Wairarapa opened the scoring when from a scrum near the line Jones slipped round the side and scored near the corner. Patrick gave Wairarapa a sixpoint lead with a penalty. From loose play on the Scots twenty-five Patrick snapped up and sent to Prior, to Stewart, who scored in the corner. Wairarapa 9, Scots 0. ■ The Scots forwards worked hard and from a penalty Watson opened Scots’ account, making the half-time score Wairarapa 9, Scots 3. On resumption the Scots backs opened up the play and looked dangerous, but Patrick changed the scene of play to the Scots line. Watson and Andrews cleared brilliantly to the Wairarapa line and James worked the blind side for Anderson to score. The kick failed. 'Wairarapa 9, Scots 6. The Wairarapa backs went on to the attack and in exciting football the Scots full-back mishandled a high kick by Patrick and Brown shot through to score. Brown converted. Wairarapa 14, Scots 6. Scots returned to the attack. Watson passed to Edge, who was brought down on the line, but a penalty in front of the posts was converted by Watson. Wairarapa 14, Scots 9.
