PARCELS FOR OVERSEAS

ADVICE AS TO POSTING. Members of the public are often at a loss to knew the best means of forwarding by post to relatives and friends overseas gifts and other articles, particularly those on which Customs duty may have to be paid in the country of destination. The requirements and restrictions in regard to articles of the kind are so varied that the advice of the Post Office should be sought before posting. All kinds of articles may be sent by inland packet post, but only bona fide trade patterns and samples without saleable value are admitted in the overseas sample packet post. To certain countries other small articles may be sent either by letter-post or by “small packet” post, but if a dutiable article is sent in a letter to a country which prohibits the entry of Customs articles in letters or if a “small packet” is sent to a country which is not a party to the “small packet” srevice, the article, instead of reaching the addressee, may be sent back to the Dominion for return, wherever possible, to the sender. The parcel-post provides the only channel for forwarding dutiable articles by post to some countries; the parcel-post, therefore, will usually be found the most satisfactory means of sending to all countries articles exceeding 21b in weight. To avoid inconvenience or disappointment through failure to observe postal or customs requirements, the senders of all packets or parcels for abroad should, as already indicated, present them at the post office.
