WAIRARAPA SEASON CLOSED. TOURNAMENT ON SATURDAY. The Wairarapa Basketball Association’s season closed on Saturday with a most successful handicap tournament, the following being the results: — A grade: Ist round. —Stars I C-G) beat College B (scr), 11-nil; College A (-4) beat H.S.O.G. II (-2), 5-2; lona (-5) beat H.S.O.G. I (-5) 6-4. 2nd round.'—Stars I beat College A 9-5; lona beat Stars II (-2), 11-1. Final: lona beat Stars I, 4-1. B grade.—lst round. —lona (-5) beat T.O.G. (-3), 3-2; College I (-2) beat Dalefield (-6) 2-minus 3; 2nd round lona beat College I 6-1; Carterton (-7) beat College II (scr) 12-2. Final: Carterton beat lona 9-2. During an interval in the afternoon’s play Miss O. R. Sutherland, president of the Basketball Association, presented the cups to the season’s winners. Miss M. Gadsby, captain of the Stars I team, received the Association’s Cup and the Lansdowne Cup for the most points secured during the season. Miss Sutherland congratulated the winners on their play and on the great keenness and determination which they had displayed. The O’Donnell Cup for the B grade was won by the Carterton team, which had not been beaten. Miss Sutherland expressed the gratitude and appreciation of the association - for the Carterton team’s sporting spirit in travelling to Masterton every Saturday so that all the games could be played on the Wairarapa College courts. Opportunity was also taken to thank all concerned with the recent Queen Carnival, which has proved so successful. All clubs had worked well and the lona Club in particular were to be congratulated on their fine total of £ 20. On behalf of the association Miss Sutherland presented Miss Hazel Beech, the lona Queen, with a charming bouquet, and a souvenir of the occasion in the shape of an engraved silver serviette ring. Miss Beech suitably replied, thanking all who had furthered her candidature.
