MORE COLOUR IN THE HOME

THE MODERN TENDENCY. Everywhere the modern tendency and fashion is to splash more colour round the home. Coloured tablecloths, coloured sheets, and coloured blankets are all the rage, and even in the rooms it is now quite fashionable to have walls of different colour, chairs and other furniture of varying hues, and even two different shades on the same wall. Give a spring-like air to your kitchen by painting over the old chairs, each one a different colour. Have one deep blue, another soft green, another blazing yellow. Keep all your bills and jottings together in a gaily coloured tin on the dresser. You could enamel an empty biscuit tin to match the kitchen colour ! scheme. Paint an old traymobile with white enamel and use it as a moveable makeup table in your bedroom. Then you can make up in comfort, in beck by ,the window, or wherever the light is best. Brighten up a gloomy little bedroom with sunny yellow voile curtains, and have bedspread or cushions to* match. Collect your most amusing snapshots together along one wall of your bedroom.

Paint the inside of your wardrobes and cupboards white or cream. They reflect the most light, and give you more chance of seeing what you’re after. Take a Batch of empty jam jars from the back of the pantry shelf, paint the lids in colours to match your bath towels, and set them up in a cheery row in the bathroom to hold.soap and bath salts and such. Remember that soft, grey walls and woodwork are a very effective background for the bright colours so popular in modern home decorating. And that there’s no law requiring you to have every wall in a room the same colour. Try two adjacent grey walls, one pale pink and the other creamy yellow. Switch about your pictures and your ornaments more often. They look fresh and different in different positions. Take a new interest in your flower arrangements. You can achieve happy effects with the most common or garden variety of flowers. Combine Iceland poppies with something blue. Arrange golden nasturtiums to spill out of big white shells. If you like growing flowers and things in pots, paint the pots white and arrange them around casually near the window in your lounge room. Avoid stereotyped colour schemes in your home. Have some courage, have some fun thinking up effects you’ve never seen before. Apart from the special gadgets which have been designed to make work easier and quicker, the modern kitchen is a poyful place becouse it’s so colourful; and colour is the easiest thing in the world to introduce successfully into a room. You may not have a refrigerator, but you can have a very modern looking ice chest painted stark white with washable enamel. You may not have an electric range, but you can keep your gas or fuel stove spick and span with heat-proof silvery finish.
