“MERELY NECESSARY”

COUNT CIANO ON POLICY IN SPAIN EQUIVOCAL STATEMENT REPORTED. MAINTENANCE OF ITALIAN . , FORCES. (Recd This Day, 12.35 p.m.) ROME, August 21. It is reliably stated that Count Ciano (Italian Foreign Minister) informed Sir Noel Charles, Counsellor to the British Embassy, that charges of renewed Italian intervention in Spain were without proof. It is believed he added that if fresh war supplies were reaching Spain, they were merely necessary to maintain the Italians at present in the field, and also that Italy could not be expected to withdraw volunteers before similar action had been taken by others, especially France. A cablegram from London on Saturday stated that Sir Noel Charles had been instructed to invite comments by Count Ciano on allegations of renewed Italian intervention in Spain—allegations reported to be causing concern in London.
