DECISIVE VICTORY

IN DAVIS CUP TENNIS AUSTRALIANS OVERWHELM GERMANY. PREPARATIONS FOR CONTEST WITH U.S.A. By Telegraph —Press Association. Copyright. BOSTON, August 20. Completing the Davis Cup round against Germany, Australia won the remaining two singles matches today, giving them a s—o5 —0 win in the contest. A. K. Quist beat H. Henkel, 6—l, 6—o, B—6. J. Bromwich beat G. Metaxa, 6 —3, 6—2, 6—l. Australia had previously won the right to play America, holders of the Davis Cup, in the challenge round by defeating Germany in the doubles in the interzone final yesterday. In the singles today Quist had the better of his opponent throughout, but in the third set he was disconcerted by foot-fault rulings. In this connection the umpire explained to the Australian Associated Press:- —“He gets both feet off the ground when hitting the ball. I am calling only a small percentage of his foot-faults, and I know I am being castigated for doing so, but, unless some halt is called in foot-faulting; it will lead to unfortunate results.” Bromwich and Metaxa both played below their form, the latter being persistently inaccurate. The attendance throughout the tie was disappointing the total for the three days being fewer than a thousand. Hopman has engaged Richards- to join Lott in coaching the Australian team for the challenge round against United States, confirming earlier intimations that the greatest concentration is being made on the doubles, since, the Australians expect to beat Rigg in both the singles. Richards confirms Hopman’s judgment that the Australians have an excellent chance of winning the cup. The German captain, Uhl, announced today that trans-Atlantic telephone instructions had been received from the German association and the team would return to Germany immediately after today’s matches. The Germans would not be participating in further tournaments.
