HARRIER ACTIVITIES
FIVE MILES CHAMPIONSHIP., WON BY PULLAR. On Saturday, at Solway, under the control of the Kiatere Club, the Five Mile District Championship was held. The race was over the Club's usual championship course and embraced a good variety of country. Owing to sickness and other causes Kiatere in point of numbers were poorly represented, only four being included in the field. The Masterton Club, with twelve competitors, including W. Pullar, the Empire Games representative, and G. Gregory, last year’s winner, were strongly represented arid an interesting race resulted.
The winner, W. Pullar, was responsible for a fine performance and at no stage of the journey was he troubled. The end of the first lap saw him teaming with his Club mates Gregory and R. Shaw, closely followed by Greeks and Burgess, of Kiatere. Half a mile from home Pullar drew away and running without any apparent effort finished eight seconds ahead of R. Shaw, who also ran a very fine race, finishing 12 seconds ahead of that consistently good ’ runner Gregory. Burgess, Kiater’s main hope, ran a great race to finish fourth. Greeks, another Kiatere competitor, was close up fifth after having been with.the leaders throughout. The final placings and times are as follow:—W. Pullar (M) 29min 21sec 1; R. Shaw (M) 29min 29sec 2; G. Gregory (M) 29min 41sec 3; W. Burgess (K) 29min 57sec 4; R. Greeks (K) 30min 35 sec 5; J. Laing (K) 31min 31sec 6; A. Burns (K) 31min 44sec 7; J. Haise (M) 32min 43sec 8; C. Wright (M) 33min 25sec 9; C. Ross (M) 33min 48sec 10; H. Harris (M) 34min 6sec 11; J. Long (M) 34min 15sec 12; R. Gully (M) 35 min 52sec 13; C. Pringle (M) 37min 20sec 14; I. Shaw (M) 37min 20sec 15; J. Baikie (M) 40min 32sec 16. The outstanding performance of the race went to the credit of G. Gregory, was defending his title. Owing to the nature of his work Gregory was a tired man when the race started, and his running in the circumstances was exceptional. Pullar’s time of 29.18 is the fastest that has eVen been recorded in the Wairarapa District Championship, beating E. J. Heiffer’s time, put up many years ago by about 38 seconds. At the conclusion of the race Mr C. Traill, president of the Kiatere Club, presented the Rose Commemoration ‘Cup to the Captain of the Masterton Harriers, who responded on behalf of W. Pullar, and the Masterton Club.
