HOUSEWIFE’S NOTEBOOK
To put a gloss on youi - kitchen floor, place a piece of starch in the water with which you wash the floor. A piece of tinfoil or cellophane placed around the cork of a vacuum flask will prevent the tea or coffee in it from turning black. When a pie or tart is ready for the oven, sprinkle the pastry with cold water. It will be nice and flaky when cooked. When a recipe calls for half a cup of butter, fill a cup half full of water, then drop in butter till the'water overflows. Men’s worn shirts may be used to make house aprons. The cuffs are excellent for pot-holders. To give friend bacon a different flavour soak it for a few minutes in cold’ water, roll in flour to which a teaspoon of mixed spice has been added, dip in beaten egg, and fry. Crumpets are delicious fried in bacon fat for breakfast. 1
