FAREWELL GATHERING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The South Featherston Hall was crowded on'Thursday night when the settlers of the district tendered a farewell social to Mr Ivan Petersen, who will leave at the end of the month for Kenya Colony. The winners qf the euchre tournament were: Ladies, Mrs R. Simmonds; consolation, Mrs. Mellish. Men: Mr R. Fuge; consolation, Mr Frank Burt. Mr H. Graham led the community sing. After supper, Mr. P. A. Wilton, on behalf of the settlers, presnted Mr Petersen with a well-filled wallet. iVjr McLeod, on behalf of the Wrestling Club, asked Mr Petersen to accept a leather travelling cost. Both Mr Wilton and Mr McLeod expressed regret at the departure of Mr Petersen and wished him success in his future home. Dancing was held during the evening and the, function concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” QUERY CLUB MEETING. There was a good attendance at the Query Club on Thursday night, when a “guest evening” was held. The members presnted a bright programme of play reading, a village concert, boys’ ballet, while much amusement was caused by the broadcast from “Station 1C.U.2.” After supper, the Kahutara Drama Circle presented a play, “Question of Ownership.” The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought the gathering to a close. PERSONALS. Mr. W. G. Russell, headmaster of the Kahutara School, has received notice of his transfer on promotion to the Hamilton School, where he is to be second assistant. Mr and Mrs Russell have been in the district for the past six years and will be greatly missed. Mrs. A. C. Paget, Pahiatua, is visiting Mrs J. A. Juno, Pahautea. Mrs P. A. Wilton and her daughter are spending a holiday in Wellington.
MARTINBOROUGH ♦ YOUNG FARMERS’ FIELD DAY (Special to the “Times-Age”). The Martinborough Young Farmers’ Club on Thursday afternoon held a field day on the property of Mr W. W. Martin, when a demonstration of mole draining was conducted by Mr C. J. Hamblyn, Fields Instructor of the Department of Agriculture, assisted by Mr N. Lamont, of Masterton. After the series of drains were made with the mole, the instructor demonstrated the method of joining them by a simple process to permit their discharge into a main artery. After the demonstration Mr Hamblyn addressed the large number of interested spectators present, and claimed by this method the cost of draining swampy country could be reduced to shillings per acre instead of pounds on account of the saving in time and material,- and contrasted its superiority to the gridiron draining.
PERSONAL ITEMS. .Sister Kent, of the local hospital staff, has returned from a visit to her, sister, Mrs L. Pickering, of Feilding. • Mr K. Sutherland, of Wellington, is spending a few days with his aunt, Mrs A. Aitchison. He will return to Wellington on Monday. Mr and Mrs Ivor Charles and infant son returned to Hinakura today after visiting Greytown and Wellington. They were accompanied by Miss Gladys Charles, of Timaru, who will be their guest for the term holidays. Miss M. McAlpine will resume her duties at the W.F.C.A., Greytown, on Monday, after being home on sick leave. Mrs Alex Todd, of Dyerville, has been spending several days with her mother, Mrs Hamilton.
