DAVIS CUP
INTER=ZONE FINAL WON BY AUSTRALIANS GERMANS BEATEN IN DOUBLES. VICTORY IN STRAIGHT SETS. By Telegraph —Press Association. Copyright. (Recd. This Day, 9.45 a.m.) BOSTON, August 19. Quist and Bromwich beat Henkel and Metaxa, 6/2, 6/1, 6/4. Quist’s volleying and Bromwich’s lobbing were features of the play in the first set. The Germans showed a tendency to take to the net, but they were never able to get further than mid-court, from which Bromwich drove them, with Quist ending the rallies with put-away shots. The services of Henkel and Metaxa were good and earned them some points, but not sufficient to make much difference. In the second set, Bromwich was content to play in the back-court, leaving Quist to finish off at the net, thus avoiding the many volleying errors which characterised his play at Montreal, but when he was compelled to take the net position his shots were eighty per cent effective. Quist’s play was of the highest class. Metaxa caused surprise by changing to shoes with spikes in the third set. The court was quite dry and there was nothing to indicate how the spikes could help them. The court was badly cut up in a few minutes. The Germans were not playing bad tennis, but the Australians simply swarmed over them. The Germans fought. doggedly, and not infrequently passed the Australians or won volleying rallies at the net, but the Australians always seemed to gain vital points, particularly when they were serving. After, the Australians had established a 4/2 lead, the Germans staged the first sustained rally of the match. Metaxa took his own service and the Germans broke through Quist’s in a series of splendid volleying duels in which the teams were” less than six feet apart, playing for all they were worth. The Germans evened the score 4/4, and then faded out. The Australians quickly ran out the set.
